Honour our Planet

I had a completely glorious birthday filled week last week which included a trip to Sun City for two congresses that we are working on, a Fire Ceremony, Tina Turner at the Johannesburg Theatre (beyond brilliant!!) and Cirque du Soleil.
I awoke to the devastation of Japan on the news on Friday morning – what a terrible disaster.

As a result, I would like to dedicate the next few weeks’ ezines to Green Travel, Spiritual Travel and Environmental Activist Issues –

The Ezine (probably one of the first in Johannesburg) and the business has been part of my life for the past 10 years and sometimes I wonder what the purpose is, as it has almost become like a personal blog space.

The most important an obvious is to remind you that we do what we do:

  • Conferences

  • Events

  • Incentives

  • Teambuilding

Equally important I think, to me would be the fact that you derived useful information from this, whether it be an inspirational thought, a new idea or perhaps taking up an activist cause.

Our Green features this week are:

Green Peace gets active in the Karoo against Fracking – click on our activist button below to read more and to sign the petition.

Green Conferencing is focussed on Sun City and their wonderful greening program – see below for more info
Green Office tips click here:

Adventure Travel you will find details about the Kilimanjaro marathon – try walking or cycling instead of driving.

See the Global Naked Bike protests that took place in Cape Town during the Argus this past weekend for cycling instead of walking - check it out here

Incentive Travel focuses on doing a Voluntour trip as an Incentive to assist Environmental Activists

Finally we have a brand new competition for you – The Nkomazi Game Reserve. Scroll down for more info ...
Wishing you a fabulous rest of the week and weekend

With love

There are only 1,000 pygmy elephants remaining in the Sabah rainforest, you may capture rare moments to see small herds of pygmy elephants in their natural habitat. Participants will also get to visit the world famous Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre at the end of the programme.

The volunteer projects have not been initiated solely for the benefit of travellers wishing to be close to wildlife – they are run as a means of generating both interest and vital funds for all the project sites they work on throughout Malaysia.

Orangutan & Pygmy Elephant Volunteer Experience

Combine your sense of adventure and purpose by touring and volunteering (voluntouring) in Malaysia's conservation and community projects by exploring the wildlife in Sabah while working with the community and contributing towards
animal conservation projects.

This structured experience is suitable for families with children who want to engender responsible and ethical travel.

Explore the conflict between animal and man, by volunteering in our habitat restoration activities including tree-planting, work at the nursery, clear invasive species and weeds, collect rainforest tree seedlings, interact with children on education and work with the community.

While you assist in habitat restoration, conservation and education work, you will be rewarded with excellent accommodation at a community eco-lodge straddled along the magnificent Kinabatangan River.

Cruise on the river and tributaries into the ancient rainforests of Sabah to explore the wildlife.

Whilst travelling along this river you have the opportunity to observe, record and photograph the many different primates, birds, hornbills, mammals, reptiles, insects and plants to add to scientific research and databases.

The programmes developed are supported by volunteers or participants whose money, 25% of your fee, funds ongoing conservation projects and indigenous community development. At the same time volunteers get the opportunity to personally contribute to project implementation through a variety of activities.

Sun City as a venue...

Sun City is hosting one of our corporate clients next weekend and we are also working on a Conference for 800 people in February next year.

As a result we headed off to Sun City last weekend to discuss the details with the Sun City team who I must say were amongst the most hospitable that I have had the pleasure of dealing with in the industry.

The hotel room had an information booklet on their Greening Policy which explains the various aspects of the Environmental policy in certain areas and what they are doing to improve it.

The areas of focus are:

  • Overall environmental performance

  • Heritage Environmental Management programme

  • Energy management

  • Water conservation

  • Carbon footprint

  • Waste management

They have also laid out their objectives for 2011 and the objectives are quite impressive.

2011 OBJECTIVES

  • To increase the number of staff and associates that have completed environmental awareness training to a level of at least 50% of all staff

  • To reduce our energy consumption by a further 10% through improved management systems and the introduction of appropriate technologies

  • To reduce water consumption across our operations by a minimum of 9.5% through improved management and awareness of water use through operations

  • To increase our total waste recycling levels to at least 38% through improved awareness and operational efficiencies

  • To participate in the Carbon Disclosure Programme (CDP)

  • To incorporate our operations in Chile and Nigeria into the group EMS

  • To increase public awareness of our environmental vision through measurable and tangible marketing and communication initiatives

When companies such as ours work with International congresses, we do not need to supply BEE certificates, we need to supply certificates on the Environmental Impact of the Incentive Trip which becomes as complicated as a BEE application!!

Let us quote on your next Conference and we will assist in making sure that it is as Green as can be: info@work2play.co.za
