Jökulhlaups and other fascinating, wonderful worldly destinations!

After nearly a six week ezine break due to the abundance of 3 and 4 week working days that we have had, it is now back to the grindstone.

I spent time in Mozambique (paradise) and then popped back into Johannesburg for three days before heading off to summer again – Skukuza, for a client’s conference, the theme being Lions and the bush. It was a perfect setting and allowed for a gentle entry back into reality after Mozambique.

My dilemma now after the ezine break is where and what to focus on in the world!!! There is so much happening, so much to do and see!

Right now, Europe is an explosion of Spring and all the wonderful cultural festivals that happen all over the continent. See
www.joobili.com for a selection of the best listed on a daily basis. This is a fantastic site if you ever travel to Europe.

Then of course Iceland is in the news again – the photo to the left was taken when we were snow mobiling on the Vatnajokull glacier, which covers the Grimsvotn volcano that has been in the headlines this week. I learnt all about Jökulhlaups ( a volcano induced sort of tsunami that originates from below a glacier), steaming hot thermal pools, geysers and other incredible geographical phenomenon when I was there last year. Iceland should definitely be on your personal bucket list or on the options as a company incentive.

Then getting back to our local shores, there is Tofo, which is featured in our Conference section and a little further afield, we have a fantastic Voluntours trip to Petra, north of Africa that is featured in our Incentive section.

Don’t forget to enter our competition and then of course check out our Adventure news, which has our very own Rian Manser who is currently kayaking around Iceland. Right now he is seriously on the lookout for Jokulhlaups when the paddles past river mouths.

I trust that you are fully rested after all the breaks, that you are happy with the election results and that you are ready to work like a trooper to make up for all the downtime. We have yet another four day week looming and there are some lovely specials available for the long weekend. My favourite place for a long weekend in winter is Maliba Lodge in Lesotho. Check out our Face Book page for a special from them and other specials.

Wishing you much joy for June .....

Manners: A person of wisdom and spirituality has very beautiful manners that have grown from genuine respect and love for the whole of humanity. Manners in this sense have nothing to do with culture or education: it is simply a question of humility. When we are at the receiving end of such manners, we feel that some deeper part of us has been honoured. In fact, none of us deserves anything less..

Voluncentive in Jordan...

As you know, I have suggested before that it might be a feel good idea to add Voluntourism to part of your Incentive Trip.

Although animals are my most favourite volunteer programs, I have just stumbled over one of the most exciting concepts for a ‘Voluncentive’

With 2011 being the European Year of Volunteering, Jordan is well-suited to attempt to encourage travellers from the 27-member countries of the European Union which are participating in EYV 2011 to take their volunteering on a road trip - either later in 2011 or in 2012.  We in Africa are just as conveniently situated to travel to Jordan.

Having Petra, one of the new seven wonders of the world, makes Jordan an incredibly appealing destination for any type of learning and exploration of VolunTourism - whether one is a traveler, an academic, or a practitioner. Historic and cultural treasures, which in some instances date back millennia, allows for a balanced emphasis on touristic engagement. In this land, travelers will cast aside a, perhaps, socially desirable reputation of being known as an altruist/volunteer for a more compelling moniker of VolunTourist. Leaving the country without a visit to Petra, the Dead Sea, the River Jordan, and numerous other locations would be incomprehensible.

Therefore, we can expect that because of these cultural & historic treasures Jordan will serve as an ideal model of VolunTourism. Doubtless, travelers will have access to unique service projects, for example, the Holy Land Institute for the Deaf (HLID), the Theodor Schneller School, or the Abraham's Path. Yet, the equalizing effects of exposure to sacred sites and historic landmarks will provide some real context and certainly lead to a more complete picture of the destination, far-removed from the skewed view of an all-volunteering or all-tourism type of experience.

We would love the opportunity to work on your next ‘Voluncentive’. Click here to send us through your group size, budget and date and we will put something incredible together for you.

Conferencing

Tofu is the venue

So you thought that conferencing needed to be in a staid venue, close to the office, and with very little fringe benefits .... I also thought so, as I was there on a diving holiday and not work. Much to my surprise I found a venue that can take up to 60 people for school room conferencing.

Let’s start with where Tofo is – it is about half way up Mozambique’s VERY long coastline. It is a two day drive from Johannesburg, but the good news is that you can fly in to Inhambane and Tofo is just a 20 minute drive from there. There is so much to do when you are not conferencing, the list is endless .....Scuba Diving, Dhow trips, Ocean Safaris, Horse Riding, Quad Bikes and more.

Send us an email if you have an adventurous team and a fair budget for the annual conference and we will send you through a quote for an unforgettable conference.
